Abstract

The article outlines the structure of the education system in the Republic of Bulgaria, the organization of teaching foreign languages and English in particular. It identifies the main aspects of language policy and its influence on the development of modern foreign language education of Bulgaria. It highlights the peculiarities of the system of professional training of foreign language teachers in Bulgaria. It presents the role of the British Council in the preparation of foreign language teachers, the main competency characteristics of the modern European teacher of foreign languages and components of elementary school education.
